DWIR_ESIA Report on Twante Canal Improvement Project

This ESIA is prepared for Phase 1 of Twante Canal Improvement Project: Channel training & Flood embankment to be carried out by Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems (DWIR), to identify environmental and social impacts. The project aims to provide the safety and efficiency of waterway transport of the canal. The geographical coverage of the area is part of the Dala Township, SeikkyiKhanaungto Township, Kyimyindaing Township and Twante Township in Yangon Region. The project period is 6 years. The field studies have been carried out by Resource and Environment Myanmar (REM) team.

Party's obligation in the implementation of the project

The project owner shall earnestly carry out all national and local laws, regulations and requirements on environmental protection, clearly define main duties and responsibilities of environmental protection departments of the project, establish and optimize its rules and regulations.

Environmental protection obligation

The project commits to precisely follow the discussed mitigation measures for avoiding or reducing such environmental and socioeconomic impacts generated in temporarily or permanently by the Project activities during both the construction and operation phases.

Socio-cultural protection

The project commits to engage the affected community and any project stakeholders in, adequate manner and meaningfully consult them for any environmental and social issues related to the project activities. Land acquisition and resettlement action plan, and grievance redress mechanism will also be done.

Environmental fund summary

During the construction phase, a budget of about US$ 53,370 equivalents per year will be allocated for monitoring and evaluation of the Project’s environmental and social performance over the construction period of 5 years. During the operational phase, an annual budget of about US$ 25,850 will be allocated for monitoring activities.
