The role and nutritional value of aquatic resources in the livelihoods of rural people, a participatory assessment in Attapeu Province, Lao PDR

The report of an assessment of the nutritional value of aquatic resources in livelihoods of people in Attapeu Province, Laos. A participatory assessment was conducted to determine the role of aquatic resources and any opportunities or threats concerning their management. People from three communities participated in activities designed to assess the local availability and use of aquatic resources, their importance in livelihoods, and health and nutrition of the villagers. The results illustrate that nearly 200 species of aquatic plants and animals are frequently used by villagers, and aquatic animals make up the main animal protein sources in people’s diets. Health and nutrition were observed to be poor, suggesting typical diets are insufficient in quantity and quality.
