The island location data is based on the existance of the island on topographic maps and nautical charts commonly used in Myanmar, sometimes adjusted using recent (2018-2022) Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Islands that are not named in those base maps used are not included in this dataset. The names are based on the spelling of islands on topographic maps and nautical charts. The names on those maps are in Roman/English script. The data producer created a best-guess Roman/English spelled island name giving preference to recent topographic maps and nautical charts over historic topographic maps. Nevertheless no verification of those names was made nor have local sources been contracted or included. The Myanmar script names are based on a best-guess transliteration of the best-guess Roman/English spelled island name. All names are non-authoritative.
The dataset includes an attribute to filter the data by country (e.g. to remove non-Myanmar islands). Islands which to the data producers knowledge are contested have the juristdiction name of both claiming parties included.
The names, presence or omisison of islands in the dataset and information regarding jurisdiction does expresses no opinion whatsoever about the legal state neither of any country, territory or area nor concerning its delimitation, frontier or border nor about the correct or best way of naming or spelling those place names.
The data and information in the data set provided here are intended for use by persons possessing technical skill and knowledge in using geospatial data and the ability to judge the fitness of data for a given purpose.
While the data is provided in good faith, the data producer does not commit to it being updated. The data producer makes no warranty, express or implied, including warranties of fitness for a particular purpose, or assumes any legal liability or responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information provided (either isolated or in the aggregate), or represents that its use would not infringe privately owned rights.
While every effort is made to ensure the data quality, the data is provided “as is”. The burden of fitness of the data lies completely with the user. The accuracy of any user’s statistical analysis and any reported findings are not the responsibility of the data producer. Nothing arising from the data should be taken to constitute the data producers professional advice or a formal recommendation.

The dataset includes all islands present on those base maps used to identify island names and locations, but for those islands for which no evidence could be found in recent Sentinel-2 imagery, e.g. excluding island that have been eroded over time.

1. Creation of a Sentinel-2 based island polygon dataset.
2. Manual identification of every named island, islet and rock on at least 3 different commonly used topographic maps and nautical chart series.
3. Checking for the existence of this island in recent imagery (Sentinel-2) and creation of an approximate island centrepoint.
4. Transcription of all name variants found in all base maps used for this island.
5. Best-guess creation of a Roman/English spelled island name based on those transcribed island names.
6. Best-guess transliteration of this name into Myanmar script.
7. Based on the polygon size of the island, calculation of the island area and classification into rough "label classes".
