Biodiversity and fisheries management opportunities in the Mekong River Basin

A paper exploring whether the fisheries sector is a villain or ally for sustaining biodiversity, using the case of the Mekong River. The author discusses factors affecting biodiversity, compares inland and marine fisheries and describes fishery resources in the area. The author argues that it is at the level of regional/transboundary aspects of resources management in international rivers where the important issues and opportunities lie, and where the most significant progress can be made. The paper also addresses assumptions about the potential role of aquaculture in alleviating threats to biodiversity.
