Land and Forest Governance in the Naga Village Republic

This report is based on a research project on the Naga customary land tenure system, conducted by Resource Rights for The Indigenous Peoples (RRtIP) in collaboration with Land Core Group. The Nagas are a trans-boundary people, comprised of over 40 tribes, living in the Naga Hills, split between north-east India and north-west Myanmar. Naga people have deep historic, cultural and spiritual ties to their land which is managed through the Naga customary tenure system. The research project worked with Naga community members to document the key components of the customary tenure systems of three tribes, with the intention that these local voices may be heard in national policy debates and dialogues. This report is intended to provide useful insights into customary tenure that will help communities, governments, and civil society to secure customary lands and livelihoods in law and practice.
