Use of indigenous knowledge for conservation and development of fishing career at the Lampao Dam in northeast (Thailand)

This study examines the development background of the Lampao Dam, Thailand, and the use of ingenious knowledge for conservation and development of fishermen’s careers. The area of Ban Sa-at Na Thom, Tambon Lamkhlong, Amphoe Muang, Changwat Kalasin was used as a case study. Qualitative research methods were used, including interviews and focus groups with 32 informants. The article describes the background of the dam construction and related indigenous knowledge is detailed. The authors conclude that fishermen conserved fish resources using the traditional concept of believing in the powers of Phi Pu Ta, and in the new concept of relying on the state sector and participating in retaining fishing careers.
